ReedTMS Logistics Introduces Tulane University To Their New 18-Wheeler

NEW ORLEANS – Tulane football practice ended in an unconventional way on Tuesday at Yulman Stadium, with the entire team heading over to the Mintz Practice Field to pose with the program's newest addition: a Green Wave-painted 18-wheeler powered by ReedTMS Logistics.

The vehicle will serve as an equipment truck throughout the season, transporting football equipment to road games while the team flies to its destination. The 18-wheeler is emblazoned with "Green Wave" along the side, an Angry Wave logo on the cab, a helmet with Yulman Stadium superimposed on the visor and an "18" on the front of the cab to commemorate Devon Walker and that jersey number being retired this year.

"It's awesome, isn't it?" Coach Willie Fritz said following practice. "We see all these other teams come in here with these big old 18-wheelers, and now we've got one. It's a great advertisement for Tulane University, football program in particular, and I think it'll be first-class."

The new equipment truck will save travel time because it will allow equipment to be housed inside and cut down on loading and unloading on a week-to-week basis. Fritz himself drove the equipment truck back when he was the head coach at Blinn College in the early-to-mid-1990s. Things back then were a bit less fancy.

"It didn't look like that," Fritz joked.

On the field for Tuesday's practice, the wide receivers had a strong day with redshirt senior Brian Newman making a diving catch that earned a congratulations from Fritz.

Newman, who began his time at Tulane as a walk-on, was awarded a scholarship last month. But he knows he can't let that be the highlight of his Green Wave career.

"Getting that [scholarship] was definitely a goal and a huge help for my family, but I always think that complacency is one of the biggest, dangerous, most poisonous things that somebody pursuing excellence can ever have," Newman said. "So I reached that goal, onto the next one. Rejoice in that moment and then move on."

Junior Darnell Mooney also continued to impress. Fritz has praised Mooney's ability to learn quickly and never have a bad day of practice. When Mooney joined the team in the fall of his freshman year, Fritz was happy to see Mooney catching up quickly with those players who were there for all of spring practice.

"He's done a great job and is a smart football player," Fritz said. "One of the higher football IQs on our team. You tell him something once, he masters that immediately. He's just a good all-around football player."

Mooney came on strong at the end of last season, making 34 total catches for 599 yards and four touchdowns. In the first seven weeks, he never had more than three catches. But Mooney made at least four catches in four of the final five weeks of the season and had three of his touchdown receptions in the final five weeks.
"[Finishing strong] gave me a lot of confidence," Mooney said. "At the end of the year I know I had a lot of touchdowns that I left out there."

He's also continued to build his trust with quarterback Jonathan Banks, and he knows that relationship will take them far on the field this season.

"It's all about trusting your quarterback, and he trusts me," Mooney said. "We're relying on each other. He knows his success is my success and my success is his success."

Tulane heads west to Metairie for fall practice on Wednesday. The team will be practicing in the afternoon at the New Orleans Saints Facility.

The Green Wave open the 2018 season on Thursday, August 30 at home against Wake Forest.
